Hanwell and Kingsclear Rural Communities Open House Update |
|
At public Open House meetings on October 17 and 18, the Rural Communities working Committee outlined the Rural Communities concept to about 130 Hanwell and Kingsclear residents. Information on the Rural Community model along with some mapping information was made available for residents.
The potential rural community would consist of both Hanwell and Kingsclear merged into one Rural Community with an elected mayor and council. The purpose of the meeting was not to determine any direction but to respond to questions regarding the concept. To proceed further, a petition needs to be signed by at least 25 residents from each LSD asking the Minister of Local Government to proceed with a feasibility study.
If a feasibility study determines that the idea has merit, residents of both Kingsclear and Hanwell would vote in a plebiscite whether or not to join together.
The committee chair, Peter Michaud, thanked all the residents who came out to become informed. The petitions will be made available to the public at the Kingsclear Recreation Hall on October 27 from 7pm to 9pm for residents to sign.
Committee members will also have the petition available for residents to sign it. The goal is to have the petitions presented to the Minister of Local Government in November to ask the government to proceed with a feasibility study.
